Somali,AU forces seize suspects and arms in Kismayo swoop
Kismayo(Garsoornews)–Somali and African Union forces in the port city of Kismayo on Friday arrested 50 suspected Al-Shabaab sympathisers and recovered assorted weapons following an operation aimed at security in the city, officials say.
During the operation, soldiers made door to door search in several neighborhoods and arrested the suspects, according to area government security Chief Gen. Ismail Sahardid who spoke to Garsoornews.com by phone.
He said the operation was meant to secure the city ahead of the upcoming Jubaland conference expected to kick off in on Saturday.
The some of the suspects are being held in central police station while those seen to be security threat were transferred to AMISOM bases in the area.
In early November last year, around 400 people were arrested and weapons recovered in a similar crackdown just few days after the fall of militant rule in the city.
The crackdown followed a spate of attacks in city including a hand grenade attack targeting government soldiers, injuring eight of them.
Several light weapons including hand grenades and rounds of ammunition were also recovered during that operation.
